Dr. Gylfi Magnússon Minister of Business Affairs in Iceland and former Fulbright recipient.
Dr. Gylfi Magnússon
Gylfi Magnússon is the Minister of Business Affairs in Iceland and a former Fulbright recipient. Gylfi graduated from the University of Iceland in 1990, and received his doctorate from Yale in 1997. When he received his doctorate, he was already a researcher at the Institute of Economic Studies of the University of Iceland. He joined the Faculty of Economics and became associate professor in 1998. He served as Head of the Department of Business Administration from 2000 to 2004, and as Dean of Faculty from 2004 to 2007. The Icelandic Fulbright Alumni Association founded

The first Annual Meeting of the Association was held on the 18. of September 2008, but the Association was founded on March 23rd of this year. The Association welcomes Fulbright Grant recipients that have received grants from the Icelandic Fulbright Commission, both Icelandic and American. During the past 50 years, the Fulbright Commission has supported a little less than 1300 grantees, more than 700 Icelandic and 500 American.


The main goal of the Alumni Association is amongst other things:

• to bring together scholars and professionals from a wide range of academic fields and professional expertise, for their own personal benefits and the benefit of the Commission.
• to promote global understanding.
• to encourage dialogue and interaction between international scholars, experts, and activists on topics important to the political, social, and cultural life of nations.

During the past year the Commission has actively been seeking our Alumni to join the Association, as of now there are about 180 members registered.

COBB PARTNERSHIP AWARD
Ambassador Charles Cobb, Carol van Voorst the United States Ambassador in Iceland and the recipient K-C Tran with his family.
On June 10 K-C Tran received the Cobb Partnership Award at a reception at the residence of the U.S. Ambassador Carol van Voorst. On July 4, 1991 Ambassador Charles Cobb, then the United States Ambassador to Iceland, and Ambassador Sue Cobb presented the city of Reykjavík with the statue Partnership in commemoration of 50 years of diplomatic relations between Iceland and the United States.

The Icelandic Fulbright Alumni Association was founded in March 25th of this year
The Icelandic Fulbright Alumni Association was founded in March 25th of this year. During the past 50 years, the Fulbright Commission has supported well over 1200 grantees, more than 700 Icelandic and 500 American. U.S. scholars have come to Iceland to lecture or study at Icelandic University institutions for the benefit of many, and Icelandic scholars have likewize travelled to the US for the same reasons.
Mrs. Harriet M. Fulbright, the widow of late Senator Fulbright, arrived in Iceland to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Icelandic Fulbright Commission. The celebration was held at the University of Iceland where the board of the Fulbright commission, alumni, current grantees, Mrs. Thorgerdur K. Gunnarsdottir, the Minister of Education, Science and Culture and many other guests also attended. During the event Lára Jónsdóttir, the Executive Director, announced the upcoming founding of the Fulbright Alumni Association.
The main goal of the Alumni Association is to bring together scholars and professionals from a wide range of academic fields and professional expertise, for their own personal benefits and the benefit of the Commission, promoting global understanding. The Association should encourage dialogue and interaction between international scholars, experts, and activists on topics important to the political, social, and cultural life of nations.

The Fulbright Commission's annual reception was held at the Residence of the United States Ambassador to Iceland, Mr. James I. Gadsden, on May 11th. This reception is in honor of the recently chosen Icelandic Fulbrighters, who will be leaving for study and research in the U.S. this coming fall. Nine Fulbright grants were awarded.

Senator Fulbright's Hundredth Birthday
J. William Fulbright was born on April 9, 1905 in Sumner, Missouri, and so would have been 100 years old this year. He was educated at the University of Arkanas, where he was awarded the B.A degree in Political Science in 1925. He then attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar and received an M.A. degree. He studied law at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. In 1936 he returned to Arkansas, where he was a lecturer in law and, from 1939 - 1941, president of the University of Arkansas. He was the youngest university president in the country.

He entered politics in 1942 and was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1944 and became one of the most influential and best-known members of the Senate. His legislation establishing the Fulbright Program slipped through the Senate without debate in 1946 and was signed by then president Harry Truman.

Fulbright Scholars Acknowledged at Annual Reception
The Icelandic Fulbright Commission held its Annual Reception on June 2nd in Idno in Reykjavik. Both Honorary Chairmen of the Board, United States Ambassador to Iceland Mr. James I. Gadsden and Icelandic Minister of Education and Culture Mr. Tomas Ingi Olrich were present, as well as many Board Members and friends of Fulbright, when the Commission's Executive Director, Lara Jonsdottir, handed out Certificates of Award to new Icelandic Fulbright grantees.
