Fulbright grantees of both nationalities being honored at the anniversary celebrations

Fulbright at fifty - Iceland The Iceland-United States Educational Commission celebrated its 50th anniversary with several events around February 23. On February 23rd 2007 exactly fifty years had passed since the bilateral agreement between the governments of Iceland and the United States was signed by then Foreign Minister of Iceland, Mr. Gudmundsson and the U.S. Ambassador to Iceland, Mr. Muccio, to establish a Fulbright program in Iceland. The 50th anniversary celebrations were at held at the University of Iceland on February 23 and around 300 alumni and other guests attended whom the Fulbright commission had invited. At the reception, the Executive Director announced the upcoming founding of the Fulbright Alumni Association. Ms. Harriet M. Fulbright arrived in Iceland a week before the reception to give lectures at various universities in Iceland. The main event was a reception where alumni, current grantees and their families plus colleagues were invited to a reception at the Big Hall at the University of Iceland for celebrations where the main event was honoring current grantees, presided over by Lara Jonsdottir, the executive director, Mrs. Thorgerdur K. Gunnarsdottir, the Minister of Education, Science and Culture, and the widow of late Senator Fulbright, Ms. Harriet M. Fulbright. In all, Icelandic and American grantees now number well over 1200. The Commission hosts 7 American students and 3 scholars the academic year 2006-2007 and 8 Icelandic students and 2 Icelandic scholars are going to the United States on a Fulbright scholarship in 2007.
