Christopher Long receives the 2018 Cobb Partnership award

Chris’s association with Iceland search and rescue began in 2003 when a colleague in America suggested he invite a member of the Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue to the annual Washington State Search and Rescue conference. What has followed from that first meeting has been 15 years of correspondence, visits, exchanges, and collaboration all aimed at expanding and sharing their mutual interest and passion for search and rescue.

Cobb Partnership Award 2018 - Call for nominations

The award is presented on average bi-annually to an American who has demonstrated a long commitment to fostering U.S. relations with Iceland and to the building of bridges between the two countries. The award was established in 1991 by US Ambassador Charles Cobb and his wife Ambassador Sue Cobb. The Fulbright Commission Board of Directors is now calling for nominations for the 2016 recipient. The nomination deadline is March 13th.

New Fulbright Iceland-NSF Cooperation in Cyber-security and Critical Infrastructure

The National Science Foundation and the Fulbright Commission in Iceland are partnering on a Pilot project to support Fulbright grants for U.S. academics and professionals working in the field of cybersecurity and critical infrastructure. The project is intended to foster collaborations and build relationships between U.S. and Icelandic institutions and scholars on these important shared issues.

Fulbright Iceland Fund - donation form available

The Commission is pleased to announce the launch of the Fulbright Iceland Fund, a U.S. 501(c)(3) charitable fund, which has been set up through our partner organization in New York, IIE. Through this fund, U.S. residents and U.S. based companies can make charitable donations to Fulbright Iceland and receive tax deductions in accordance with U.S. law. We encourage our friends in the U.S. to seize this opportunity to support the work of Fulbright Iceland.

The Fulbright Commission has recently signed agreements with two U.S. universities

The Fulbright Commission has recently signed agreements with two U.S. universities. The University of Maine School of Law will provide one grant per year for an Icelandic lawyer and Fulbright grant recipient to attend the LL.M. program; and Colorado State University will provide one award per year for a Fulbright grant recipient to pursue graduate studies at the university.

The Fulbright Commission and EducationUSA advising center are moving. The offices will be closed on Friday the 16th and Monday the 19th of September. On Tuesday September 20th we will open at the new location, Hverfisgata 105, 2nd floor

Capacity-Building Workshop was a great success

The Capacity-Building workshop on attracting US students to Iceland was a great success. Participants came from all universities and university centers in Iceland and had a productive day at the US Embassy. The Fulbright Commission thanks the U.S. Study Abroad Branch of the U.S. Department of State for its support.

Fulbright Capacity-Building Workshop: Attracting U.S. Students to Iceland

On April 19 the Fulbright Commission will host a capacity-building workshop targeted for appropriate university personnel and is by invitation only. It will center specifically on strategies to help Icelandic universities to better attract American students by discussing their perspective and motivations for study abroad. It will also cover marketing tools and strategies to better target U.S. students considering study abroad programs, and to help Icelandic institutions develop their processes to better take into account the specific needs of U.S. students. The program will be available in early April. The event is free of charge. The workshop is supported by the U.S. Study Abroad Branch of the U.S. Department of State.

Good attendance at meeting with Fulbright specialist Dr. Nicole Dubus on welcoming refugees

‪Fulbright specialist, Dr. Nicole Dubus, gave an open talk on Best practices for successfully welcoming and integrating refugees into local communities, on Friday November 27 at the National Museum of Iceland. The event was organised by the Ministry of Welfare, the Fulbright Commission, RBF and MARK. Discussions took place after the talk, where Dr. Dubus answered questions from guests. Attendance was good, as around 50 guests came to the meeting.

Final Presenations by US Fulbrighter grantees

Five US Fulbright grantees will present their projects and discuss their experiences in Iceland at an event at the Fulbright Commission. The event will take place on 13 May from 2 to 5 pm.

Dr. Bjarni Magnússon has been selected as the Icelandic member of the Arctic Initiative cohort. Seventeen researchers from Arctic Council nations, including the United States, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, and Sweden will engage in collaborative thinking, analysis, problem-solving and multi-disciplinary research over the next 18 months as a part of the U.S. Department of State’s Fulbright Arctic Initiative The diverse group of scholars will explore public-policy research questions and offer innovative solutions through a variety of disciplines ranging from geology and biology to law, sociology, global health, and art.

College Day Reykjavik was a great success

College Day Reykjavík was a great success – exhibitors and students were extremely pleased with the event. We had 19 schools among this year‘s exhibitors, as well as the Icelandic Student Loan Fund, the Association of Icelandic Students Abroad, and Fulbright/EducationUSA. An estimated 300 students attended the event, and the general consensus among exhibitors was that the attendees were very interested in the options available and keen to go to the US to study.

How to create a niche on the market, combining your academic skills with your passion

The Fulbright Alumni Association is hosting an event under the Alumni Talk Series on Wednesday, March 25th at 12 noon. The guest speaker is Dr. Margrét Jónsdóttir Njarðvík. Margrét holds a PhD in Spanish literature from Princeton, where she studied as a Fulbright fellow. After many years of working in international education, Margrét decided to follow her passions and open her own company, Mundo, which is both an innovative travel agency and international consulting company. Join us for an hour of inspiration and interesting conversation. The event is open and everyone is welcome.

Agreement with NSF for Arctic Research

This January 21st, the Fulbright Commission will sign an agreement of collaboration for Arctic research with the National Science Foundation (NSF) of the United States. The signing will take place at the Icelandic Embassy in Washington, D.C.

Cooperation with the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in Arctic Studies

The Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Fulbright Commission have concluded a cooperation agreement to set up a Fulbright scholar grant in Arctic Studies. Through this agreement the Ministry for Foreign Affairs will fund US scholars to teach and conduct research at Icelandic universities over the next three years.
